It Just Comes Natural

Hey guys!

For once I didn’t have a race this weekend! Crazy, huh?

Let’s get right in to it, shall we?

Uhhhhhh……..Ok wordpress changed something. The little tab where I could select my font size is now gone. Hello? Where’d it go?

Um so anyway….

Running Week:

This seems a lot less exciting without my bigger title font. *huffs at wordpress*

Well I guess the font size fits my running the past week or so! After the 10K…I didn’t feel like doing JACK. I seriously laid around all week. Between being tired in general, burnt out on school work, and doing 3 races in 3 weeks…I was DONE.

So I was a slug all week. It wasn’t as great as it sounds. You ever do that? Decide to rest…but then just end up feeling lazy? I hate that.

Sunday I kicked my self back in to gear. My half training schedule called for a 5K race, but we all know I can do that, no prob. So I was going to try for 7 miles…but I only manged 4. That’s not too bad though! It was mist/raining…so by the time I got back from 4, I was SOAKED.

The good news is that so far this week I had an AWESOME 4.5 mile run yesterday, and a…mostly crap-tastic 3miler today. 🙂 Oh well. It’s better than last week already!

Also today I had one of those “I never thought I’d say these words” moments. I found myself saying to my neighbor “I think I lost my pepper spray in your yard.” which I followed with “It’s pink. If you or your dog happens to find it, please let me know.”

You feel like a winner when you lose your pepper spray. 🙂

See, it’s not my fault, I swear. And I don’t NORMALLY carry pepper spray! Honest! But I was going to run this long country road…where there’s not many houses, not a lot of traffic…but there are dogs…and other animals…and we’re in the woods…and there can be coyotes….and there have been shootings and a few rapes here so um…yeah. Pepper spray. So. I was heading out to run, and the neighbor’s dog spotted me and came tearing after me, so I helped catch her…and apparently my pepper spray fell off in their yard. I didn’t notice till halfway through my run…but I figured that’s where it had fallen.

So yeah. Pepper spray. But the good news is my neighbor found my pepper spray and I now have it back! Yay for not having to spend 15 bucks!

Anyway.

No races in store for this weekend, but I AM going to hike Dragon’s Tooth  (which is part of the AT) with some of the Striders! Super excited about that. Get ready for a TON of pictures!!!

There’s absolutely NO knitting to speak of, so let’s move on in to this week’s…

Favorite:

So this week’s favorite is thanks to last week’s favorite. 🙂 This week’s favorite is the movie Food Inc.

Wow. Just WOW.  Did you know that the average food product travels about 1,500 miles to get to your grocery store? And that transporting food accounts for 30,800 tons of greenhouse gas emissions every year? Did you know that in order to kill the bacteria in the hamburger you buy at the grocery store, it’s been soaked in ammonia? Did you know that there is some corn product or corn byproduct in almost everything in the grocery store?

If you haven’t seen it…please, just give it a chance. You’ve probably wasted an hour and a half of your life on something MUCH less important, less interesting, and less entertaining…so just…try it. Netflix has it…I’m sure you can find bits and pieces of it floating on the web…

I liked it so much I bought the DVD so I can make all my family and friends watch it.

Even just go to the website. http://www.foodincmovie.com/ Just…look around. I mean…don’t you think you should know a LITTLE something about the stuff you actually put inside your body? We all want our doctors to wash their hands before surgery…or even before they poke and prod us in the exam room. Don’t you want to be sure the food you’re actually putting inside yourself every single day…is safe?

So thanks to Food Inc…I’ve made some pretty big changes in the last week or so. I’ve started eating all organic…or as much as I can find. I’m in rural southwest VA…and some grocery stores still don’t carry organic stuff. But on the weekends I’m going to the farmer’s market…I’ve made two homemade pizza’s…with amazing homemade sauce and dough…a rockin homemade salad dressing…and of course my amazing scrambled eggs.

Organic just TASTES better. If you’ve never had free-range organic eggs straight from a farmer…you’re missing out. Eggs will never taste the same again.

Anyway. This favorite has been too long…must cease and desist.

Other Junk:

Well I really have no other junk. OH WAIT! Yeah I do! Haha.

More planting!!! It ties in nicely with my whole organic deal. If you’ve had veggies you raise yourself…you KNOW how much better they are than the store-bought ethelyne-gas ripened crap. Bleh.

Tomatoes, broccoli, eggplant, romaine lettuce, and more!

Tomatoes, broccoli, eggplant, romaine lettuce, and more!

So excited for these little guys to grow up!!!

I also made sweet potato chips. I haven’t perfected it yet…but they are SCRUMPTIOUS!!! If you’ve made chips at home by baking them…PLEASE tell me how to get them crispy?! Mine turn out either burnt, or slightly mushy…like french fry consistancy. I mean I eat them either way but…how do I crisp them?

Mmmm sweet potato chips!

Mmmm sweet potato chips!

Other than that…just….trying to get through the next 37 days until school is OUT!!!!!! I can’t wait. 🙂

Sharing Shoutout:

This week’s shoutout is to Miss Ashlei over at The Vegster. I want to say a HUGE thanks to her for sharing her amazing-fantastic-yummy-delecious-tasty-freakingawesome granola recipe.

Doesn't that just look amazing! And it's not even cooked yet!

Doesn't that just look amazing! And it's not even cooked yet!

It’s her Double Coconut Granola and it can be found on her blog under Recipes. Let me tell you….it is amazing. In a word…”granogasmic”. I devoured the first batch, only stopping long enough to share a taste with mom…and I just made a double batch today. 🙂 I will never buy granola from a store AGAIN. This stuff is better than cookies!

Hellooooooo granola.

Hellooooooo granola.

Ashlei…you freaking rock.

Alrighty, off to eat some granola!!

All my stuff keeps breaking. See “Other Junk” for details.

Annnd it’s been almost 3 weeks!

I swear, I need to work on my posting regularity. The good news is there was a lot more running than blogging so…that’s what counts, right? 🙂

Knitting Week:

Hmm…where did I leave you? Oh, my fun little bags! Well using said bags quite a bit. Haven’t made more…no time and haven’t been home but that’s ok.

I did finish ONE of the aunt’s socks! One more to go!!!! I also cast on for a cat sweater that dad wants.

Yeah. Cat sweater.

Not a sweater for him with a cat on it…but a sweater for his cat.

Yeah.

I’ll just stop there. There are no words. But feel free to google images of “cat in sweater”. It’s highly amusing.

This is the one I’m making, except in red.

Yeeeah. Cat sweaters. So wrong. So very wrong.

Yeeeah. Cat sweaters. So wrong. So very wrong.

Yeah.

Running Week:

So far this week, 2 good runs and some awesome yoga.

Last week, 2 run days, some sick days, and some yoga.

Week before, 3 run days, bike day (whoo!) and some other stuff.

PS, Half Marathon training started. DUM-DA-DUM!!!!!!!!! So super excited! The half is the Trail Nut Half that Mountain Junkies does. Pretty awesome if you ask me.

I’m also hoping to sign up for the MCM come this time next week. I’m debating between that and the OBX Marathon. Mom REALLY wants to do a half this fall…and since MCM doesn’t have a half…and OBX does…I’m debating. If mom will pay for lodging and transportation to OBX…I’m down with that one. 🙂 Also may talk Carly, Chrissy, Cali, Jordan and Kristen in to doing that one. Or at least I’ll TRY to talk them in to it. Haha. OH but wait…Karyn is doing MCM this year I think……Crap, I wanted to meet her! Karyn, you doing MCM? Yesno?

Anyway. Next Saturday is the Susan G Komen race here and I am BEYOND excited!!!!!!!!! Hopefully my friend and her mom, who is a breast cancer survivor, will walk it with me. That would be awesome. Either way, I’ll be there helping out and/or running/walking. 🙂

I missed signing up for BOTH tri’s so no BAMF award for me. 😦 But I will do the Mill Mountain Mayhem on April 17th. Pretty excited for that.

Moving on.

Favorite:

This week’s favorite…I’m going to go with Geocaching!!!!!! What’s Geocaching, you ask??? Well wander on over to geocaching.com and find out!

It’s basically a bunch of dorks (myself included) that use million dollar government satellites to find tupperwear in the woods.

See??? FUN!!!

See??? FUN!!!

Heh.

All you need is a handheld GPS or even a car one *speaking of car GPS’s mine died. More on that later* and a decent sense of direction and stealth and you’re off!

It’s really fun. It’s kind of like treasure hunting for secret hiding locations. Basically, you get some coordinates from geocaching.com (type in your home address, I bet you 5 bucks that a cache pops up within 10 miles of you), drive/walk/hike/run/bike to the location….and get out your handy-dandy GPS…and try to find the cache! If you do, you sign the log…and head off to the next one.

They also encourage people to pick up trash on their way to/from the cache…so yay for being eco-friendly.

It’s really fun to do with a few friends, or with little kids, or adults who act like kids…Haha. So…if you haven’t tried geocaching, then DO IT! Otherwise, TFTC. 🙂

Other Junk:

So my TomTom died. Thankfully I noticed it’s little issue when I was trying to calculate how late I was going to be, and not how to get to where I was going. 🙂

It has somehow reset itself…and when I try to turn it on, it wants me to go through the setup…and when I get to “Select Voice” it crashes, and resets itself on it’s own….so I’m stuck in an infinite loop of Power on-setup-voice screen-crash.

Not. Cool. Can’t google my way out of it either. I’ve tried. If you do happen to have a suggestion, lay it on me, cause otherwise I’ve got a silver square paperweight. (Yes I’ve hooked it up to the computer, tried to update software, done a reset manually…still looping.)

Aaaand if that wasn’t awesome enough…my car crapped itself on Monday. Well technically Friday. It started being all weird…and when I’d put it in park the RPM’s would jump up to 3,000….while idiling….so that was awesome. But then Sunday it was FINE. Acted totally normal.

Monday morning, went out to start it…and RPM’s jumped WAY up again. Turned it off, TRIED to get a ride to work…couldn’t find ANYONE…had to take an unpaid day off work (NOT COOL) and then an hour later when I tried to drive it to the mechanic…… it was fine. Totally fine.

So it’s STILL at the mechanic…they think it might be the wiring…but we won’t know until tomorrow. Let me just say this is NOT how I wanted to spend my spring break…or my birthday cash. (I’ll be….older on April 12th) So yeah.

Other news…I planted stuff.

It grew.

It rained.

My cat is insane.

The end!

(Oh, and one of my students asked me if elephants lay eggs. They were serious.)

Sisterly Love Shoutout:

This week’s shoutout is to Cali who is my friend’s sister and like a sister to me. Heh, she may BE my sister-in-law one day but we’ll see. Anyway, Cali is AWESOME because she’s not only letting me drag her in to doing her first 5K, but she’s ALSO attempting to do my half-marathon training plan along with me!!! I’m pretty sure Cali is a much better runner and a lot more in shape than she gives herself credit for. So far she’s doing REALLY well with her half-training. Hence why I am totally going to talk her in to doing a half in the fall. 🙂

Heh. You know you want to!!!!

Love you guys!

Well it’s been a busy 2 weeks yet again! SO much to tell you guys about…including 2 races! I only ran one, but still. Good times.

Knitting Week:

Well, still working on the aunt’s socks. About ready to turn the heel…I get a little grumpy during the heel…so…I haven’t been knitting as much. I avoid it. I guess I’m hoping magical knitting elves will pop out at night and turn the heel for me so I can go back to mindlessly knitting on the rest of it.

Time to suck it up, I suppose.

I did, however, make some cool knitting-related items…

I made project bags!!! Whooo!!!! I don’t know what made me do it, maybe LimeNViolet‘s podcast which I discovered recently…I think that’s somehow connected. They said “yarn-porn” and I went “Ooo!” and then I was on Etsy and then…suddenly there was fabric.

I REALLY don’t know how I got to project bags. Wow. I honestly have NO clue how I started stalking fabric. I remember looking at yarn…then wool…then handspun yarn…and suddenly I was drooling over funky fabrics and then by Friday night I was designing a pattern for a knitting bag…Saturday I bought fabric…and made 3 bags.

Cuppycake Bag!!! Pink lining...oooo!

Cuppycake Bag!!! Pink lining...oooo!

UT bag...cause that's how I roll.

UT bag...cause that's how I roll.

Summery Citrus Bag...yellow lining inside.

Summery Citrus Bag...yellow lining inside.

At any rate, SOMEHOW I got the idea to make bags. I may try and sell some on Etsy…but we’ll see. If you want a bag made, even for non-knitting purposes, let me know!

And let me tell you, there are some AWESOME fabrics out there. Try fabric.com and fatquarters.com. Look for Michael Miller fabrics or in the catagory Novelty fabric.

There’s french fry fabric, ok people?!?!

I bought bagel fabric and I laugh hysterically any time I look at it. So anyway, if you want a bag, and find a fabric, I’ll see what I can do.

Running Week:

Not a lot of running, but a lot to talk about!

Last weekend mom and I did the Explore Park 5K. I had a really awful sinus infection/allergies but this was my very first 5K back in 07 so I REFUSE to sit this one out, EVER. It was UBER cold, but whatever, I’m running.

Omg BRRR!!!

Omg BRRR!!!

Explore Park is put on by Mountain Junkies whom I adore. ALL of their races rock…and they have by FAR the best swag and food. LOVE some Mountain Junkies. If you’re ever in the Roanoke/Bedford VA area, check them out and do a race!

Race was cold, but sunny. I ran/walked…mom ended up walking a LOT because she’s been having IT band issues…I keep TELLING her to take it easy but nooooo.

And we're off!

And we're off!

Mom did get 2nd in her age group. YAY mom!!! I normally place in this race but…not with my cold/allergies. Oh well. Still got some AWESOME swag.

Yay mom! Congrats!!!

I mean hello, LONG SLEEVED TECH SHIRT!!!! You can’t beat that for a 5K.

Then this weekend was the Shamrock 5K put on by the Star City Striders! WOOT!

I didn’t run, but I did volunteer! I’m a proud Strider member and now that school is calming down, I’m working on being a more active member! Part of that includes volunteering at races, going to meetings and also writing for our newsletter! Whoo!!! I might be a regular contributer so…um…EXCITED!!!

Here are some pictures from the Shamrock Hill 5K…

Other than that, and being super exciting about contributing to the newsletter, I’ve also started the Strider’s TWITTER FEED!!! Follow us!!! Or rather…follow me, since I’m the one tweeting. Even if you’re not local, feel free to follow so I don’t feel like it’s a useless idea!!! Haha. 🙂

Oh, almost forgot…HUGE running news!!! Tomorrow starts my half-marathon training!!!!!!! I’m doing the Trail-Nut Half in June. Another Mountain Junkies race. 🙂 So…gotta hit the ground running tomorrow! I’m glad my training coincides with the time change! Perfect *non*planning!

Favorite:

This week’s favorite is going to have to be some of grandma’s Turkey Pot Pie. Mmmmmm.

Hello turkey goodness.

Hello turkey goodness.

I honestly have never had any other turkey pot pie other than that made by my grandma, and I can’t say that I want to try any others. When I was living at home, grandma would make one, and drop it by the house while we were at work/school/wherever. Mom’s not that interested in them but dad and I…well…we’ll fight to the death for one.

Grandma would leave it on the counter, and whoever got home first, either myself or dad, would consume as much as possible, then hide the rest from the other person.

I’m not kidding. We literally HID it and wouldn’t tell. Grandma finally realized this and started calling AFTER dropping the pie off to make sure everyone was informed. Then she started making two. Then I moved out and now we each get our own separate pie. But the competition is still there. Since I’m an hour away, dad offered to “get my pie” from grandma and “keep it” for me. HA. Grandma and I both knew better.

But I got my pie, and all is well in the world. And in my belly.

Other Junk:

Not a lot of randomness that I can think of. Just two pictures to share!

At some point in the last 2 weeks, it snowed again. The day before, I could see my deck...for the first time. Then....THIS.

At some point in the last 2 weeks, it snowed again. The day before, I could see my deck...for the first time. Then....THIS.

This was Thursday morning...I LOVE fog. I was so tempted to call in to work so I could go running in the fog. Ha.

OH!!! I got my stiches out!!! No pictures to show you for now, but I’ll take one. I still have a little scar and it still HURTS when I touch it…but overall I’m healing quite nicely!

Southern Warfare Shoutout:

This shoutout goes to Matt over at The Kitchen of a Runner. Matt is one amazing runner, even if his choice of football teams does suck…. 🙂 Matt is one HECK of a runner. His weekly mileage blows me away. I also totally LOVE hearing what he’s having for dinner every day…and every time eggs are involved, I laugh for some reason.

So, Matt, just FYI, you rock, I love the blog, I owe you cookies, and you need to pick a better team.

🙂

Have a great week, everyone!

I Get Knocked Down

…but I get up again.

And then I beast 5 miles.

🙂

Pretty awesome week, let’s get right in to it.

Snow Week:

Snowed and iced Monday. Another inch or so on Tuesday, then Friday night was another 2 inches. At this point I don’t even notice. The mail hasn’t ran since February 4th. I can see the post office from my mail box…and yet…no mail.

I tried on Wednesday AND Saturday to get my mail from the post office. They can’t find it anywhere. Apparently they have so much backed up mail…they can’t find mine. My netflix are in there somewhere…and some other really important items I would like to have. Granted, the mail-person can’t DRIVE up to my mailbox…but if I can park at the end of my road and walk the 30 feet to it…then why the hell can’t she? I mean…I can literally SEE the roof of the post office from my mailbox. Not even a quarter mile…and yet no mail in almost 2 weeks.

I want. My flipping mail.

Anyway. I’ve heard that we’re getting anywhere from 4 to 15 inches tonight. Bring it.

Knitting Week:

Well, finished the VT scarf! WHOOO!!!!! Thank God because I now hate that project.

I did create a new theory though. If you receive a knitted item that has stripes of color…the more stripes there are, the more that knitter must love you.

Or at least that’s the new theory for my knitting. There is nothing I hate more than weaving in ends…and on a scarf or BABY BLANKET….*cough*Beth*cough* there are a LOT of ends. Each stripe results in at least 2 tails of yarn to weave in. So…my scarf with 40 stripes…yeah.

This is why I don’t think I can crochet. I look at that crochet hook with disdain from the hours of painful end-weaving. I seriously shudder thinking about it. It makes my skin crawl.

I finished the last end on the scarf, and literally THREW the scarf across the room. I couldn’t even TOUCH it for 2 days.

I also believe this is why knitters often give away most of their projects. The bigger ones…we’ve spent SO much time on them…we don’t want to be anywhere near them for a long, long, long time.

I also started a hat to go with the VT scarf. And then had to rip the whole thing out. I was about an inch in…and realized that A) it was HUGE…like almost triple the size it should be *Yes, I still refuse to knit a swatch* and B) there was a twist. Ugh. So that’s now in a pile. I quit.

Moving on.

Workout Week:

Did some really good upper body work this week and some ab work. Then Saturday was Long Run day. Mmmmm LR.

Planned to do 3 miles…it was a decent day out. Maybe 33 degrees or so. Where I run, it’s straight uphill for about half a mile, and that part is WINDY and cold. That’s also the first part so…I was well layered.

I also put on my yaxtrax because of the snow…however I quickly learned that it takes more than yaxtrax.

It helps if your sunglasses don’t fog up…and if they do, here’s a little tip: Don’t keep running while you try to mess with them.

Within the first quarter mile of my run…as I tried to de-fog my glasses without slowing down…I stopped paying attention to where my feet were going…and didn’t notice the HUGE mound of snow and ice that had positioned itself in the center of the sidewalk.

I hit it….and did a superman-esque dive over the pile and in to another pile of snow, ice, and mud.

Lots of mud.

I was SOAKED. Gloves, pants, shirt….SOAKED.

Everywhere there is dry mud…there was ice/snow/water…from my knee, all the way up to my arm pit, and down to my wrist. Rockstar.

See the stains? Yeah, I went DOWN...

See the stains? Yeah, I went DOWN...

Ugh. I was soaked.

Ugh. I was soaked.

So I almost quit then. But…I figured I’d do one lap, then be done. I was already out there….so may as well do something.

I took the gloves off because they were the most irritatingly wet. I did my lap…and got back to the car and felt pretty good. Luckily…I keep extra gloves in my car so I traded them out and decided to hit another lap. I did an extended lap, adding on another road…and then decided to do one more…and then one more.

By the end, my 3 mile run turned in to 5.3.

Kicking ass and taking names. 🙂

Favorite:

I am going to embarass myself right now. Ready?

This week’s favorite…is NASCAR.

Yeah, yeah, I know. But you gotta understand, I’m from the south…it’s part of life. I teach in a location that has a track…I….just love it. And today…is the Daytona 500!

But my favorite part of Nascar…something I like almost more than actually going to a race… Ok I probably DO like it more… It’s a Nascar Nap.

A Nascar Nap occurs when you turn on the race…and about 30 laps in…you just pass out. You can’t help it. It just knocks you OUT. And it’s always a REALLY good nap. Mmmm, Nascar Naps.

I had mine today, have you!?!?

Other Junk:

So…driving around this weekend, I passed this sign.

Bwahahahahaha!!! Global Warming. Heh.

Bwahahahahaha!!! Global Warming. Heh.

Enough said.

🙂

Strenghtening Shoutout:

This weeks shoutout is a thank-you to Missy. I really appreciate you giving me your personal Ironman experience. You really have made me want to go for it even more. Your emails have really motivated me. In a couple years…I think I’ll be ready.

So if you haven’t checked her blog out, go see Missy and enjoy her story. She’s a really inspirational blogger!

Life’s Too Short

January 28, 2010 at 8:21 pm | Posted in Blogroll, Music, Quotes | 8 Comments
Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

This is going to be…a different blog today. A little backwards from normal…but we’re getting back to normal.

So here goes.

Oh I am young but I have aged
Waited long to seize the day
All things said and plenty done…life’s too short

Could this be….
Could this be the day I’ve waited for?

Life’s too short. Life is too short not to be happy.

But it doesn’t mean I don’t want to just stop what I’m doing and scream. I want to scream so loud because it hurts so much. Nothing has ever hurt this bad. It’s constant. It doesn’t come in waves. It’s a permanent ache.

But…I’m strong. I can do this. God did not bring me here if I couldn’t handle it.

I’ve accomplished a lot already. Every day…I want to call him. I want to share my excitement with him.

But I may never be with him again. So I need to start being excited for myself…and letting go…because nothing is certain except what I do with myself, by myself, for myself.

I’m proud of myself though. Really proud. Part of me wants him to know…because he would be proud too. But…if he decides I’m not the person for him…then he has made his decision to not share in the highlights. And I’ve got to be ok with that.

I’ve done some things this week that I honestly never thought I could, or would, do. I am starting to let go of my fears. I’m starting to really believe in myself. It’s a great feeling. *Sperl, you know what the BIG thing is… 🙂 Thanks for helping with that one, girl.*

I’m working on 5 things. Faith, Trust, Love, Confidence, and Strength. I need to have more faith in God. I also need to have more faith in myself, and I still have faith in Tracy. I know he is going to do what is best for him. And I’ll do what’s best for me. I need to work on trust…in a really big way. I don’t trust myself, my decisions, or my judgment. If I can’t trust myself, how can I even begin to trust someone else? I did make a pretty big decision this week…and I haven’t questioned it once. So that is one positive step. I also need to work on loving myself. Again, I have to love me before someone else can love me. Those both tie in to confidence. I need to have a LOT more confidence. That will come with time. And if I can manage all those things, I know it will make me a stronger person.

So…I’m working on healing. I’m working on ME. It’s not our relationship that was broken…it was us as individuals. If we are supposed to be together….then we will find our way back to each other once we’ve had some time to fix our own issues. And if this break helps us realize we aren’t supposed to be together…then that’s the way God wants it. Either way, I know I will come out a better person, and I’m sure Tracy will as well.

I’m trying to have faith. I’m trying to be positive. There are parts of me that are still full of doubt. There are parts of me that just want him back…no matter what. But…that doesn’t fix the issue. I still feel like he’s the one I’m supposed to be with…but only time will tell. I’m hoping the pain gets a little better in time, but I know I can handle it. I’ve handled worse.

So…the blog might be a little more serious. Some “real” parts of me might sneak in now and then…but for the most part…I’m going to try and focus on ME…and the more positive parts of me in here.

Also, I think the “Work Week” section is going to be dropped unless something major happens.

So let’s get on with it.

Workout Week:

2ish miles Monday with the downstairs neighbor. It was superfun!!! We ran a GREAT hill that I thought I would NOT be able to go up…but I kept going. I ran…and ran…and went UP the WHOLE hill without stopping. This thing is a MONSTER…and I did it. I didn’t think I could but I did. HA!

Talked to mom about upcoming races. She’s gonna pay some of my entry fees so it’s not as hard for me to get by. YAY!!!!!!

Poll results……DUM DA DUM!!!!!!!!!!

Well it’s a tie. 35% for Rumpass in Bumpass, and 35% for BOTH. Honestly, I’m leaning towards both. We’ll see. 🙂

Knitting Week:

Not a lot. Still need to finish the second baby hat…really frustrated with Aunt Cynth’s scarf…don’t feel like casting on anything…but that’s ok. I’ve got plenty of other stuff to do.

Did see some nifty sheep though! Was going to take more pictures but a car came up behind me…

Very fun sheep-ies!! Anyone know what breed this might be??

Very fun sheep-ies!! Anyone know what breed this might be??

Favorite:

This week’s favorite…aside from any and all medications that allow me to stop thinking and sleep…is Librivox. You can download a TON of books to your ipod…for FREE!!!!!

Granted, these may not be books that people want to read on a regular basis…but it’s the classics. Almost any book in the “public domain” is out there!!! AWESOMENESS!!!!!!! For the dork in me, I can listen to Walden by Henry David Thoreau…and Origin of Species by Darwin….do you know how much that rocks?!?!?!

But they have a lot of really great stuff, mysteries, poetry, everything!

Other Junk:

Ok so it flooded like WOAH down here. The rivers rose so high a lot of schools were closed most of the week. On my drive to work, I could tell that at one point over the weekend the river had been completely covering where my car was and my car would have been fully under water the river was up so high.

Some people now have waterfalls in their yards where landscaping used to be. I’ve never seen flooding this bad in person!

Worked on fiddling this week. I’m…really not that bad at it. I’m kind of shy about it because…I never expected to be good at it. I’m really excited though. The next paycheck is due any day now and I’ve rearranged finances so I can afford one fiddle lesson a month!!!!!!

SO excited!!!

I did attempt to buy a fiddle rest…and…I don’t think the guy gave me the right one. Must correct this soon.

I also had traffic court this week for my super-awesome ticket…but it’s all good. I got a day off work, so that’s good, right??

After court…I spent some time driving around. Took some pictures of the ice storm damage…listened to music…

Everywhere I turned there were trees with their tops snapped off. Not limbs...TOPS.

Everywhere I turned there were trees with their tops snapped off. Not limbs...TOPS.

There was also a super-awesome horse...sculpture/statue? made of wood.

There was also a super-awesome horse...sculpture/statue? made of wood.

"The woods are lovely, dark, and deep. But I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep."

"The woods are lovely, dark, and deep. But I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep."

There’s been a lot of music listening as of late. So many songs that either pick me up…or say what I want to say. Things I wish I could tell him. But…I’m keeping my distance. He wants time…I can give him that.

Even if I do want to violently shake him and tell him to cut this crap out because I know we’re both more miserable now than we ever were together. We were never miserable. We barely fought.

Oh the things I would say to him if I could…

But mostly the violent shaking. 🙂

Anyways. It’s supposed to snow here this weekend AGAIN…so that’s going to be great for my running. I really should go run today since it’s not freezing outside. It’s only semi-frostbite.

******Edit*******

I didn’t run like I should have. WHY, you ask? Well…because shortly after writing this draft on Wednesday…I realized I had driven the HOUR back to my “home” from traffic court this morning (awesomeness) for dead tags…and junk…only to realize that I FORGOT TO CAT SIT AND GIVE MY COUSIN THE KEY….both the cousin and the needy cat….back at HOME-HOME….an hour away. So…I had to jump in the car…drive an HOUR Home-home….cat sit and all that mess, THEN an HOUR to a Dr’s appointment…then 40 min back to “home”.

That’s a whopping total of close to 4 hours of driving in one day…and really I never went more than 45 miles away….just…did 45 miles 4 times. I could have almost made it to the freaking beach. I could have made it to three different states. Yeah. That’s absurd.

But moving out.

Sincere Shoutout:

This week’s shoutout is to each and every person who posted on my previous post. You have no idea how much your words, thoughts, and prayers touched me. I love all you guys so much. Just the fact that you read this babble…makes me smile. And when you care enough to comment…it makes my day. I love it so much. So thanks guys. Thanks for being there, thanks for reading, and thanks for helping me through this.

It’s been awhile guys!!!

I’ve been busy though, so that’s good, right?

So let’s get started.

The Work Week(s):

Well, I’m gonna be honest, the first week back was ROUGH. So tired. So very, very tired. Second week, not as bad, but I got sick a little bit. Blah.

Also, I tried bribing my kids to pass their benchmark test…it didn’t work. Ugh.

And that’s all I have to say about work. Might delete this section because…really…I don’t like to talk about it!!!!

The Workout Week:

Yeeeeeah!!!! I ran on the elliptical, I ran OUTSIDE because it was WARM for the first time in FOREVER….I also went for a little walk today.

Big news though….

*drumroll*

I have picked out my 2010 race schedule for the most part!!!

Here are the highlights. 5K’s excluded…those come and go as they please.

June 5, 2010 – Trail Nut Half Marathon brought to you by Mountain Junkies!!!! My favorite race series/director/whatever EVER!!!!! My first ever 5K was a Mountain Junkies race. I’m offically a Mountain Junkies junky. Hehe.

Oct 2010 – Gonna try for the MCM again. *nods* Yep. I should do that. Gonna try! 4 months is enough between a half and a full, right? That’s a good schedule, yes?

Now, the big question, I need YOUR help on this!!!!!

April 17 – Mill Mountain Mayhem 10K (Another Mountain Junkies)

OR

April 18 – Rumpass in Bumpass Sprint Triathlon.

What to do, guys? What to do?!?!?!

So…go vote!!!

******************************EDIT*********************************

So…the poll IS annonymous…didn’t mean for it to be…but I’d love to know what you voted for, so feel free to leave it as a comment as well!!! But as long as you vote in the poll, I’m a happy camper!!!

*******************************************************************

The Knitting Week:

Big news, guys!! Big news!!!!!!!!!!

Guess who has now entered in to the world of SPINNING!!!!!!!

*points at self*

Yeah, that’s right!!!!

I took this...

I took this...

...and made that!!!

...and made that!!!

Yeah, it’s not much…but I’m working on it. I’m not too good at getting an even weighted strand yet, but I’m trying!

I’m using some of Abby Franquemont’s video’s off of youtube. So far, I’m not actually dropping the drop spindle in order to spin…rather spinning it in my hand, and moving the twist down the yarn….if that makes any sense.

If anyone wants to pop in and offer advice, please, please, please appear and speak your mind!!!

Also, did my FIRST intarsia *color work* AND first knitting on DPN’s *double point needles* this week!!!

See Courtney Knit!

See Courtney Knit!

Knit, Courtney, knit!

Knit, Courtney, knit!

Congrats Kris and Lyla, who are the proud recipients of my masterpeice!!!

Ta-da!!!

Ta-da!!!

I actually did a second baby hat for another friend’s baby and just have to weave in the ends so that one will be done! Man, I need to throw these things up on Ravelry!!! I’ve been slacking at uploading projects on there!

Well, I guess that about wraps up the past few weeks of knitting!

Favorite:

Hmm….this week I think I’ll have to go with Coconut Macaroons dipped in Chocolate from Bea the Baker. Simply AMAZING.

Coconut and chocolate, what could be better??

Coconut and chocolate, what could be better??

Those aren’t hers, persay, but you can see what I’m talking about. Every single time I go in to town, I try and get one. So if you’re ever in, around, about, or through Floyd VA, then STOP and get one!!!!!! You can find them at various locations on either side of Floyd’s single stoplight.

If you can’t make it out to Floyd, then see what you can find around you!!! Let me tell you, Bea’s are the best though!!!!

Onward!!!

Other Junk:

Not a lot of other stuff to report. Well, my best friend/accountant/running buddy/partner in crime/fave person ever came down….and helped get my financial mess in order.

Yes, folks, this is one in debt blogger.

Student loans piled up…along with some ill-timed tickets from the fuzz….and other life-type nonsense…and I find myself in the throes of debt and collections calls.

The good news is it’s not as bad as I thought!!! Miss Carly has helped me out…and set me straight! Hopefully by April all will be right in my finaicial world and I can stop stressing so much!!! But until then….we are on a complete and total spending freeze.

Meaning mom will get hit up for race entry fees and such. 🙂

Anyway, that’s life. It could be a lot worse!!!

Other news…the fiddling….is coming along. Right now I’m learning Angeline The Baker. Not too bad. I totally LOVE my fiddle though. My instructor is Mike Mitchell of the Floyd Music School, and let me tell you he is STELLAR.

I just wrote 2 paragraphs on how much I liked the lesson…so that’ll be next week’s favorite or shoutout. Point is, fiddling is going good. I can do the first 2 lines without really screwing up too bad. YAY!!!!

So in closing, we shall proceede to our….

Sperlific Shoutout:

This is the part where I go “Oh crap, Sperly tagged me for something. I should go do that thing she tagged me for”

So, first off, if you don’t know her, please go check out Sperly, my blogging/running/triathalon idol. 🙂 She is one of the most AWESOME chicks out there!!!

Second, she has tagged me for the Pay It Forward 7 Fun Facts deal….

Since this post is OH so long….I’m gonna go write those as a separate post and throw it up Wednesday or Thursday!

Go do my poll!!! Watch for the 7 Fun Facts, you may get tagged!!!!!!

I Love This Bar

I need a bar.

Reason A) I have 2 weeks of summer left. Reason B) I can’t run. Reason C) Half my laptop screen is messed up and permanetly darker than the other half.

And my warranty is expired.

Dude. You’re not getting a new screen.

ANYWAY. Quick shoutout to one of the best podcasters out there. MEGHAN DO THE 5K!!!!!!!!!!!!

And sorry about the pictures. I’m away at a conference and do not have my camera cord with me. So sorry.

But I can update on…well did I update on the speedwork? I did speedwork!!!! Yeeeah. 🙂 It wasn’t quite as painful as expected so that was good. We did a mile warmup, 4 400’s, and then a half mile cool down. As soon as I’m runable again I need to do more. THANKS CARLY!!!!!!!

Then Saturday I did 8 miles for my LR. It went pretty well even though I got a later than usual start. Mom ran 6 of it with me and I finished the last 2 alone. It was a little painful and I was a little stiff afterwards but not too bad. However later that afternoon…I kind of got a little injured and it was totally my own fault. So…the person out there who may THINK it was her fault should NOT FEEL BAD. Seriously. That’s why I haven’t told you anything…cause I don’t want you to feel bad cause then I’ll feel bad….but anway. I got stepped on by a horse. It caught my ankle at a really awesome angle…and it hurt like hell.

And it swelled up. And I went to the hospital after my friend that’s an EMT looked at it and made me go. GOOD NEWS is it’s not broken. Or at least it does not have a visable break at this time. It is possible that there is a fracture and it will just take a week or two to show up on an x-ray…but for now it doesn’t appear to be broken in any way but I’m not supposed to run.

It still hurts quite a bit…and I tried to wear “real” (aka non-flipflop) shoes last night and that was a no-go. It doesn’t so much hurt to walk as it hurts to put pressure on the point below my ankle where the hoof hit. THAT’S what really hurts. So…shoes put pressure on that so…no shoes and no running for me.

However I’m totally going to try tomorrow morning and see how far I can make it. Or IF I can make it. My initial plan was to go to the pool that’s located near where my conference is at but the pool doesn’t open until 11am. That…does not work for me.

So. Running shall be attempted tomorrow.

But for now, I’m going to glare at the dark portion of my computer screen.

Well it’s been too many Sundays since I took the time to laugh
And I’d take a small vacation if I could save up the cash…

                                                              ~Bonepony

Well I took a small vacation!!! Because I couldn’t save up the cash for a real one….but that’s ok.

But first we’ll go over the “long” run of the weekend. I say “long” run because it REALLY didn’t feel like it was that long and I felt like it should have been longer. I guess I have the idea in my head that if I’m doing a LR, it should FEEL like a LR. It should hurt. And this all goes against what I preach at mom about not overdoing it and being careful…so yeah.

Carly and I did 6 miles. Ok Carly did 9.5, I did the last 6 with her because it’s been a long time since I’ve ran more than 4. And apparently I should have tried for 7 or 8. I felt fine. Granted it’s partially because it was a SLOW long run. But…that’s how I plan to run my marathon so that’s fine. We did really well. The only issue I had was some small blisters that appeared in their usual places. I blame the new socks I tried.

They were DeFeet Speede socks. And I don’t so much blame them as I do my own stupidity. I bought a size small because they didn’t have any extra small’s. And I KNOW I have small feet. I am a small-ish type person. My running shoes are around a 7 or 7.5 and my regular shoes are a 6. Little feet.

So the morning of the run when I put on my new socks…I knew RIGHT AWAY that they were too loose. But I continued and ran with them anyway. AND didn’t use body glide on my notorious blister spots.

And guess what!

I GOT BLISTERS!!!!!!!!!! Duh, Courtney.

But other than the last .5 miles of running it was awesome!!! I’m going to try to do 8 this weekend and get back on track for my marathon plan. I’m behind right now, did I mention that? BEHIND. Not good. Very concerning for my first full. Part of me thinks “HOLY CRAP I’M OFF SCHEDULE I AM GOING TO DIE!!!”. The other part says “Hey, you’ve done 2 halfs. You’ve done a tri. You have been undertrained before and you still pulled through. You can walk parts. You don’t have to go fast. It’ll be ok”.

I don’t listen to that last part as much…maybe I should…but I’m still really concerned. Maybe it’s because I don’t have a set in stone marathon plan. I’m still kind of flitting between two or three. Because I am behind. This was my FIRST long run, ok? The marathon is Oct 25. FIRST LONG RUN!!! First LR should have been in JUNE. I’m about 4-5 weeks behind. 14 weeks till the race.

But…I can’t turn back time so we’ll go on.

So the first long run went well. And my goal today is to get my marathon plan recorded. So I should feel better. Oh, and here’s my FAAAAVORITE post-run snack. I’ve probably posted this before but pshh, you’ll deal.

Ok the camera battery is dead so I can’t get the picture on here. I’ll do that later. But it’s a strawberry and orange protein shake (my recipe!) and a graham cracker with peanut butter. Mmmm. SO good.

Other than the LR, I did take a mini-vacation this weekend. The boyfriend and I went berry picking and I managed not to die climbing down the mini-mountain the berries were on! Why berries have to grow on the freaking face of a mountain I do not know but it is quite frustrating. I want to eat them, but do I have to risk my life to do so?!?! Apparently so. And Carly and I are going to go pick more later this week.

Also, the boyfriend and I played golf!! Ok, he played, I rode in the cart and took pictures. It was a BEAUTIFUL day, perfect for golf!!! I love golf, but…I am just NO GOOD. So I love watching and riding in the cart. And no, I do not drive the cart. I do not like to and I do not want to and if I can avoid it, I will not drive it at all. Not even 2 feet. No. I like to RIDE. I am driven. I do not do the work. 🙂

So once the camera battery gets over itself, some of my awesome pictures shall be uploaded below!

Oh, one more thing!!! Does anyone else find short runs harder than long runs sometimes? All the time? Any time? I SWEAR my long runs are ALWAYS more enjoyable and easier than my 3 mile morning runs!! Maybe I go faster on the 3 milers, but I swear it’s not that much. My 5K PR is around 27:00 and that’s not even that fast. Maybe it’s the mindset, maybe I’m going absurdly slow on the 6 mile run…but I LOVE my long runs usually. Short runs…3 or 4 miles….BLAH. Not fun at all. Anyone else have this issue??

Ok, that’s it for now. Have a good week, kids!!!

All Apologies

I do apologize for being lax with blogging but I have been rather sick. I thought it was just allergies but apparently it was a rather nasty cold and I barely felt like getting out of bed most days.

But I’m on the mend, so on to other news!!

Well there’s not a lot in the way of actual running due to the sickness.  I basically haven’t done much of anything since the tri…but I did pick out some other triathlons I REALLY want to do. 🙂 I think I’ll do another pool swim but we’ll see.

I did get out and do a decent run this morning. It was only about two miles but for as awful as I’ve been feeling, I’m somewhat pleased. I’m hoping to make a repeat effort tomorrow. According to an article in Runners World (I have no idea which issue, I’m several months behind and reading in whichever one is closest at hand) running while sick can sometimes help you get better, or at least it can’t hurt. Sometimes. If it’s the pig flu, I’m guessing you shouldn’t run. Or interact with other human beings. Or something.

My theory was I’ve been sick and feeling like crap for over a week, so if I’m going to feel like crap, I may as well accomplish something and run while I’m feeling like crap. It turned out well in my opinion.

I do have a small announcement to make…there’s a chance I will be writing an article for my local run club’s newsletter. I’ve been a member of the Star City Striders for over a year now. Since grad school is winding down I can finally be more active in the club! I submitted a piece to the editor and it appears as though it may be usable. I’m mildly excited.

And by mildly I mean I’m about to bounce off the walls.

In case you haven’t noticed, I like writing. And I like running. Therefore I like writing about running. This has been kind of a small dream of mine for awhile and I’m SUPER excited that even one article I write may get published. I don’t want anything big…I’m not trying to be famous or write a running book…I just enjoy writing small tidbits about my running life. 🙂 So we’ll see what happens, but there is a possibility that if THIS article works out, I could contribute in the next issues as well. Cross your fingers!!

So that’s all I have for now. Sorry it was short and picture free, but if you haven’t already read it, the triathlon report is below so feel free to go amuse yourself there!

I Try

Yeah. That’s right. I did my first triathlon!!!!!!!!!!

Angel’s Triathlon!!! J I was sooo nervous but I did pretty well!!! I met my 2 goals which were to FINISH and to do so in under 2 hours!!! YAY!!!!!!!

So we’ll start on Saturday.

First off, on an un-tri-related note…my cat decided to be a holy terror. I was sitting in the living room having lunch and from my bedroom I hear a massive crash that sounds as though he may have set a bomb off somewhere in my closet. I fully expected to walk in my bedroom and be able to see through to the neighbor’s apartment. Thankfully that was not the case…but somehow…SOMEHOW my cat had managed to JUMP to the very tip top of the closet…a good 8 feet from the ground…and then had proceeded to shove everything off the closet shelf. Everything.

When I got in there, this is the scene I saw.

And then…from above…lept my cat. He jumped down…walked out of the room…then came back in, sniffed the wrecked pile of stuff in the floor as if to say “I heard a crash, I came as quickly as I could. What happened???” and then once he saw that none of his belongings were involved in the crash, he went to rest behind the door.

Yeah. That’s the face of evil. But it’s cute evil.

So after I cleaned up his mess, and cleaned my apartment, and packed, I left for mom’s at around 1pm. Mom and dad then drove me to where the Tri Club was meeting to go to the race. And let me just say, I only freaked out about what I was packing about 3 times…which is good for me.

Oh, and before I left, Tracy wrote some good luck messages on me. One from the dog…and one from him.

We loaded all the gear in to the vans and we were off! And I proceeded to mildly freak out about the reality of the impending race day.

The race was about 2 hours away and we were staying with one of the club member’s parents. They were making dinner for us and had some wonderful snacks ready when we got there. While we waited we chatted and I got to play a pretty decent game of chess! Woot for chess!!!

Dinner was amazing and then we went over bikes and checked the gear. (Read as: Everyone who knew what they were doing checked their gear and bikes. I pestered people with questions and said about 40341 prayers. However the Tri Club is amazing and dealt with my questions VERY well. You guys rock.)

So…then we had a small meeting and then it was time for bed. And…I woke up around 3:30am or 4. Because let’s face it. I worry. A lot. And I freak out on a regular basis…and…there was plenty for me to worry over. Or at least I thought.

By 5:15 when the alarm went off I’d given myself an awesome upset stomach. Thankfully I didn’t have time to freak out too much because we had to be out the door by 5:45. So…I packed and ran!

We got to the race site around 6am and set up our transition areas and get body marked. Since this was my first time one of the other more experienced members helped me set up. Actually almost all of the other members helped me a GREAT deal. They ALL wished me good luck and they were all amazingly supportive. Not once did they make me feel like an outsider in their club/sport nor did they treat me like I had no clue what I was doing…which…well that was the reality of it. I am so grateful to the entire club for being so overwhelmingly helpful, friendly, and supportive.

For this race they ask you who you’re running for, meaning someone that currently has an illness or has passed away due to an illness. I chose 3 people to run my race for; my friend’s cousin who had passed away, Matt; My former art teacher who died of cancer, Sally; and my friend’s mom who is currently fighting cancer, Shirley. The names of these 3 people were written on me in permanent marker and are still on me right now.

So once I had everything set up…and had re-checked it umpteen times I began to go over my game plan. By this time I was trying to figure out what part of the tri to worry about most. I knew I could deal with the run…because I’m a runner. I know how to do that. I’ve got plenty of experience. So that leaves the swim and bike to fret over. Well….I’d swam almost double the distance of this swim earlier in the week so I knew I was capable of it…and I’d tried biking this week and…well…you know that story. So…my logical deduction was that I should worry about the bike. Ok. 15 miles of biking. If I can get through that…I can do this.

Right.

Well the event started at 8:00am. My start time wasn’t until 9:19am. So…I had some extra worry time. But thankfully, MOM APPEARED!!! YAY MOM AND DAD!!!!!!!!!!!

They set to work taking pictures and around 8:45 I got in the warm-up pool and did a few laps and before I knew it, it was time for me to line up.

THEN I WAS DOING A TRIATHLON!!!!!!!!!!

Nice pic, mom.

I PASSED SOMEONE SWIMMING!!! Yeeeah me. Go me. I was one of the two people with the VT Tri Club that was doing their first tri. She and I decided that our goal was to pass someone at some point in the race…and I SO TOTALLY DID!!! So did she, so congrats to her!

Anyway, then I was off and running to my first transition. I spent a little extra time here because I wanted to make sure I got everything right and also since I FAIL at drinking water while biking…I made sure and drank before I got on the bike. So…then I was off. And I biked.

And I kinda rocked it.

I did stop twice to drink and take a Gu because everyone had told me hydration was key…so I went with it. And really, the bike part was kinda nice. I enjoyed it. I did go slower than I would have liked but I am still kind of scared of going fast down hills so I stayed within my comfort zone and just enjoyed it. I got a little sore but not too bad. Before I knew it, I was biking back towards the transition area. I only had to get off the bike and push it one time because there was one very evil hill. Actually, there were two evil hills, but the second one had AMAZING crowd support and I’d like to give a huge shoutout to the Angel’s Volunteers…without their cheering I never would have made it. I still can hear their voices in my head. I think they knew how hard that hill was so they positioned themselves there for a reason. I can honestly say I wouldn’t have made it up that hill still biking if it hadn’t been for them. So…if you were volunteering for this race, thank you. You have no idea how much your support meant. You are the ONLY reason I got up that hill.

And then it was time for my second transition. Time to run. Running. I got this. I’ve done this. I know I can do this.

I got part of a Gu…got a lot of water…and ran.

And mom met me and ran with me!!! YAY MOM!!!

But dang. I was exhausted. Just…spent. I ran. And I ran as much as I could. But eventually I had to walk. It was hot, pushing 80 degrees, and I was TIRED.

So I walked some and ran some…and WAS able to finish the race running!!! And actually my run time wasn’t terrible. I’ve had worse run times!!!

Looking back…you know what part I liked the best? The bike.

Remember what I decided to worry about? The bike.

Yeah.

So my times were as follows: Swim – 8:08. T1 – 2:31. Bike – 1:08:23. T2 – 1:19. Run – 35:34.

Total time: 1:55:52. Under 2 hours. I did it.

I TRI’d my best. And I’m now a triathlete. And the USAT sticker is now proudly on my car.

And when I got home from the tri, there was a surprise in my freezer. The worlds most amazing boyfriend left ice cream cupcakes and some…instructions for how to arrange them depending on if I finished or not (He was exposed to my excessive worry…I think I damaged him) which was awesome. He had to leave for a business trip so that’s why he wasn’t there to support me. 🙂

And I’m already picking out my next triathlon. I’ve found some awesome ones in Tennessee later this summer… J

And Shoutouts:

Heather: For being the best trainer ever. For always making me feel better. For picking me up when I fall. For pushing me. For telling me I could do this. For never giving up on me. For being a BAMF. Thanks.

Jan: Thanks for getting me through the half. And thanks for checking in to see if I’m doing ok. J Your support means a lot and I promise to continue to keep you updated about my progress!!! MCM is coming up and I plan to bug you plenty about it!!!! I can’t wait to start back with TNT again soon!!!!

Dad: Thanks for driving. And you’re a great pack mule. LOVE YOU!!!!
