My First Half Marathon

May 28, 2008

This page hates me. I have no idea why it’s all caps in part and huge in other parts….I tried to clean the HTML but that didn’t work….so…it’s just going to be like this until someone shows me how to make it not be such a pain. It’s different on the visual than it is when published. I don’t know…but…whatever.

Jumping Back In

Well, for the first time in a long time I did manage to get a workout in. It was a small one…but still. It’s a start.Coming back from being sick is a lot harder than I expected, but I really need to get active again. I know I’ve lost a ton of muscle condition and have turned most everything into fat at this point so building back will be a long road.Today I did about 45 minutes of yoga, pilates, stretching, free weights, and leg work. I can already feel it in my abs and quads. We’ll see how I feel tomorrow. Maybe by Saturday I’ll be up for a small run!!

Random Post

Seriously. There is no possible way that you can comprehend just how FREAKING EXCITED I AM RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!In a little over 2 weeks I will be at the Rock N Roll Half MARATHON!!! Me. I’ll be there. With over 60 bands that I get to see for free. With COMPLIMENTARY BEER after the race. With INXS playing the post concert. With my favorite author and magazine columnist, John “The Penguin” Bingham speaking to a select group of people that I HAPPEN TO BE IN the night before the race. With the ocean. With the Virginia Music Festival. With the freaking 13.1 miles that will be on LOCAL, NATIONAL, AND INTER-FREAKING-NATIONAL TELEVISION!!!!!!!!!!!!!I. Am just a tad excited.Just a smidge.Lil bit.Holy Crap. I mean how can you worry about running 13.1 miles when you’ll be too busy watching the 14 bands that are along the course?! How do you worry about finishing when you know that on that course, somewhere in front of you, are some of the greatest athelets in the world? Every inch of that course will be on camera. That exact course that I will run. I will be literally running in the same footsteps as record breaking runners. On the same course. At the same time. What other sport in the WORLD can you do that? Golf? No. You can’t even get on some of the greens EVER, regardless of who is there. Not even to watch. Nascar? Yeah, you can drive on some tracks at low speeds, but no one famous is there. Basketball? Nope, you can’t get on the court with Michael Jordan. I. Am. EXCITED!!!!But really. All that excitement, and I don’t feel like I’ve accomplished much. I mean, yes, I have now in training ran 13 miles. But…it wasn’t that hard. My coaches and mentors did such an amazing job of helping me that it really wasn’t that hard. So let me just say that if ANYONE out there enjoys running even a little, or walking, because you CAN walk marathons too…just let me know if you’d be interested and I’ll tell you how to do it. And believe me, the finishers medals are worth it. (Because the finishers medal for the Niki Women’s Marathon….is a sterling silver TIFFANY’s necklace. Yeah. The REAL TIFFANY’s. Blue box and all. Exclusivly made. Yeah. That’s worth it.)So anyway, here’s some stuff about my race….so be excited with me.http://www.rnrhalf.com/home.html – Main Race Website, pretty cool, all the details like course map, cool free stuff that you get for running, and list of all the bands

And there’s the course map, just for fun.

2007 Finisher's Medal

And the medal I will be getting.

It will be locally televised in VA beach on Channel 13, and NATIONALLY on FSN, check local listings. Also internationally but…that doesn’t apply to me.

Day 105

Getting up today wasn’t as hard as the second/third mile of my run. I was ok for the first part, but for some reason at about 1.5 miles I really wasn’t feeling like running. But I did. I ran past all the normal park people…the older lady with her beagle, the guy with the hat, and the 2 middle-aged ladies that walk on the road beside the trail.By the time I got to the 2 ladies I was on my fourth, and last, mile, and I was feeling much better. I did a decent sprint at the end.I feel that my training was excellent this week because I’ve actually managed to do every single workout and do them on the day they should be done!! No slacking for me!!!That being said, this Saturday instead of training with the team I’ll be doing a 5K and it’s a trail run so….we’ll see how that goes.I think I’m supposed to do 7 miles this Saturday…so maybe I’ll do the 5K in the morning, then maybe run 3 or 4 miles that night. We shall see.

Day 104

Getting up this morning was definatly not something I wanted to do. I didn’t manage to make it to the park until around 6:30am so I parked at the wooded end. I ran up and over to the park loop and couldn’t decide if I wanted to just do 4 miles, instead of 5, or which route to take.I decided to go along the river route, and either go out for a mile and back for a 4 mile run, or go out a half mile and back to the loop for 5, OR if I should do 4.5 miles. I went out the river route and decided to go for the full half mile. I wasn’t feeling so hot by the time I got back to the loop even though the weather was quite cool. I walked for about 2 minutes, but then picked it back up.I was on the back half of the loop and passed an older gentleman as I often do on my morning runs. This man was quite friendly as I ran by and asked me how I was doing. I replied “tired” and he said he wished he could do what I was doing. That really made me think. I’m so lucky to be able to run. I made it the last 2 or so miles in a decent time, enough so to finish running in about 45-50 minutes, which is a great time for me, espically with walking! However at the end of my run I had a very sombering occurance. I usually sprint the last little bit, and I sprinted past the end of the parking lot where there had been some construction the week before. I noticed a new marker and bench. When I stopped to read this marker, I started to cry. The marker was placed in memory of those lost at Virginia Tech on April 16th. That really touched me…mainly because I grew up in this town, which is right beside Tech…and I go to Tech as well.We Will Prevail.

Day 103

Well, this mornings run was AWESOME!!!The start to the morning was slightly less wonderful due to the fact my cat…who now lives indoors…has decided that the alarm clock going off is the signal for him to burst into the room, sprint across it like his tail is on fire, and pounce. On my face. And as it is my passion to hit the snooze several times…this happend repeatedly. I was unimpressed. So I got out of bed and was ready to run by 6:05am. However it seemed rather dark out so I stretched in my apartment instead of at the park.I got to the park around 6:15am and decided to run the more well-lit and open portion first while the sun came up. It was a wonderful temperature outside. I did the first two miles without even noticing it. The park makes a large loop beside the river and it was breathtaking to look across the grassy field of the park which was covered with mist.I did 2 miles around the loop, then went up the big hill and over to where I normally park, then back to the river.I did a half mile along the river away from the loop and then back to my car, so 5 miles in total. At the last quarter mile my FAVORITE song (currently) – Crazy Game Of Poker by O.A.R. came on so I did a nice sprint at the end and was very pleased.Great day of running. Really wonderful. And I’m sore from the crunches I did last night. The pushups however didn’t do much.Hopefully tomorrow’s run will be just as productive!

Day 102…and some others

Thursday I did…something? 3 miles maybe? I’m not sure.Saturday I participated in another local fundraiser and due to the timing/heat I didn’t run this weekend. But today I did pilates this morning and tonight I think I’ll do some weight training. I was busy most of Friday moving in to my new apartment so going up and down 3 flights of stairs in 90 degree heat may have counted as a slight workout.Tomorrow it’s supposed to cool down and I’ll hopefully get my 5 miles in first thing.

Day 97

At least I think that is the right day…Anyway, yesterday I only did 4 miles due to a lack of time. I didn’t get out of bed until 6:30 and needed to be back home from running by 7:30. Other than missing a mile I did fairly well.Today I need to fit in 8ish miles, but I’m thinking I’ll do less since technically I’m starting to taper now. I did 4 this morning. Even at 6:30 the humidity is a KILLER here. I think it’s supposed to get better next week. We’ll see.I’m going to go buy NEW SHOES today!!! YAY!!!!And my toenail fell off last night. Just fyi.

Day 95?

Well, Saturday I ran 13 miles. It hurt somewhat. The first 4 miles I did with Coach Brett. We ran out to the library and back to our meeting place to see if any of the winter team came. One person did so that was nice. Brett went with her so he could tell her more about what we do and I continued on for another 9 miles. At around 7 miles there is a place that we set out water, powerade, and gels. I paused there for a minute then did another1.5 miles out and back, so then I only had 3 more miles to home because of the backtracking.By the end I had 2 large blisters and when I was stretching on the ground I basically couldn’t move my legs back into a sitting position. The rest of the day I was pretty much useless…which is AWESOME when you need to be packing your entire room…but some soup, grilled cheese, and sleep fixed me up!!!I also attended Steppin’ Out which is a local event where one of our TNT members had a dunking booth to raise money. I volunteered to be drown for an hour and it was quite fun. My friend threw the first ball…and subsequently caught me off guard and I sucked up a LOT of less than clean water. After that I learned to catch myself so it wasn’t too bad.Today I did some yoga to work out the soreness that’s still left from the weekend. My arms are sore from all the catching and climbing of the dunk tank!!!Also I started my new job…which is at a desk so I’m highly concerned about becoming less active. I’m going to try and make an effort to stay extra fit while at this new job.Well, that’s it for today. 5 miles tomorrow…I think….

Days 86-91

Well, Day 86 I ran my 4 miles at a good pace… Day 88 was the 9 mile long run…NOT OK. I hadn’t slept much so I struggled a LOT.Day 90 and 91…we just won’t talk about…except to say I’m way too busy right now.But tomorrow is a new day…

Day 85

Today was a touch interesting. I attempted running around 3pm…after napping on the couch for about an hour or so. I made it a mile on the treadmill because it’s raining outside. It was rather pathetic. So then I needed to go to the grocery store, it had stopped raining, and the store is past the park so I figured I’d give it a go. I did 5 miles at the park, so I got in all 6 miles…although not all at once, I figured it’s still not bad. The 1 mile at home was on a 4% incline so that’s something I suppose.Down to 4 miles tomorrow!!! Hopefully there will be a break in the rain around 10am when I get off work. We shall see!!!

Welcome to Day 84!!!

And it’s raining. But this is a very, VERY good thing where I am because…well we haven’t had any in a long time and the grass and garden REALLY appreciate it!Today I decided to get up early and run. Apparently my body listened to the “get up early” part. I woke up at 3, finally went back to sleep around 5:30 for the alarm to go off at 6. Needless to say I didn’t get out of the bed and make it to the park till 7:30. I ran 4 miles, and it didn’t start raining until around the last half mile. Not too many people were out…and it started thundering so I can understand why.I did my 4 in decent time, espically considering the soreness from the kickboxing workout yesterday!!!Well, I’m going to head to work soon, 6 miles tomorrow…that’ll be AFTER work Everyone wish me luck!!!

Day 83…and some others

Well…last week I was not great about blogging OR working out. But we’re back on track for this week!!Last Monday I did pilates, I ran Tuesday and Wednesday but vacation time hit on Thursday and I have spent the last 4 days being contentedly inactive. But it’s Monday and back to work AND working out.I just finished 30 minutes of kickboxing and 5 minutes of crunches. It was a pretty good workout. I think I’ll feel it tomorrow.I plan to get my 4 miles in EARLY tomorrow before work, so everyone keep your fingers crossed that I manage to get out of bed and get in a good run! YAY for being back on track!!!!!!!!!!!

Day 72

I was pretty much a slacker in every respect yesterday. I don’t even want to talk about it.But today instead of running 4 miles I did 5!!! And almost repremanded someone else’s child. This “father” type person was just letting his son run amuck on his bike and the small child almost ran me over. I mean rode the bike RIGHT UP ON MY HEELS!!! I really almost turned around and kicked the bike over but I decided to just run really fast.Lately I’ve been trying to conserve energy until the last .1 miles or so and sprint the last little bit. So…I sprinted away from the small, yet reckless, child. So I’m still super happy with my run, satanic undisciplined child and all.Now off to do some more pet-sitting!!!

Day 70

Well it was a busy day for me even though I was off of work. I decided to run first thing in the morning and that was probably a good idea because by 5pm I was passed out on my friend’s couch I went for my 4 mile run around 8:00 this morning. I did it in a decent time considering I ran 1 mile then it started to rain so I finished the last 3 miles in a slight summer rain. It was nice though because it was WARM out there!!! Lots of people were out enjoying the rain so that was kind of fun.The only icky part was getting in the car all soaking wet 5 miles tomorrow…not sure when I’ll squeeze that into my schedule but we’ll see!!!

Days 51-69

Yep, still better at working out than at posting.Let’s see….I don’t remember the first part of two weeks ago…but that weekend when I was supposed to run 9 miles I did not…I was feeling VERY ill Friday and not quite up to par saturday.I was fine by Monday and did pilates. Tuesday I ran 3 miles, met a very nice lady in the park…at night…talked to her until about 10pm (VERY late run that day) She was really sweet and it turns out she lives near me.Wednesday was the 4th of july 5K in the park. I got a new PR and 3rd in my age group which was a 10 year spread so that was impressive. Then Thursday I did 5 miles in the heat and it was not pretty. I managed to do it but MAN it was a workout. So I was NOT thinking I’d do well this Saturday. After not running the previous Saturday, having a crappy run Thursday, not getting all my miles in this week, AND not eating my normal Friday dinner…I figured I’d be pathetic.Turns out…not so much. I ran 10 whole miles and at a pretty good pace too!!! I was so impressed. I mean…I ran every single bit of 10 miles. That’s just absurd. I really can’t believe I did that.Afterward I had a bake sale with another TNT member at the local grocery store. We did pretty well. However I was kind of feeling a bit of the milage and soaked my feet in a bucket of ice for the better part of the bake sale. So now it’s Monday. I just did 45 minutes of Pilates and now I’m off to work!!!I will blog more. I will. Honest.

Days 48-50

Monday I did pilates and then a body sculpting tape. VERY sore…but good Tuesday I ran 3 miles in the park. It went fairly fast, I think I did it in around 35-40 minutes which with hills that’s good for me.Wednesday I ran 5 miles on the trail with LOTS of hills in about an hour. Very pleased with that workout. I passed one of my teammates so that was fun. She’s doing a different marathon than I am. I had a really good run and was very proud of myself. In a few hours when it cools down I’ll go run 4 miles in the park. I’m debating between the hills and the flat course. We shall see!

Recap of Days 42-47

Again, let me state that I am much better at doing my workouts than I am about blogging. We shall start with Monday. I did yoga and pilates with lots of stretching. Tuesday I ran 3 miles. Wednesday I ran 5 miles. Part with Runabout then the rest on my own. I did really well on Wednesday. There was about a 20 minute break between the Runabout run and my own run but by the end of the 5 miles I was REALLY feeling good and sprinted the last .1 miles.Thursday I did 4 miles in the park. I didn’t do so well. Possibly from the lack of sleep and the fact I ran the 5 miles the night before then the 4 the next morning, about 12 hours apart. But I did all 4 and was proud of myself. At the end of my run I passed a woman with a dog that I’d passed earlier. She asked me how far I was going and I said 4 miles and that I was almost done, just around the end of the parking lot. She was stretching from her run so I stopped and talked with her. I asked her about her run and told her about Team In Training. She seemed really interested and I gave her my card so she can get to the website. I hope she thinks about joining. She was very pleasant. Also while I was cooling down from my run I ran into my high school math teacher, Mr. Lawerence. He’s a wonderful teacher and I was happy to see him, and his dog, Gizmo. I’m so glad I finally realized one day that he was actually teaching me useful information and not trying to bore me to sleep. Then friday was an off day and Saturday was the BIIIIIIG 8 mile run. Friday night I had Fazolies. That’s my pre-race favorite, apparently. I’m also going to stick with it, because it works. So Saturday I woke up and ate a cereal bar, drank some water, and headed to meet the team to run. I was not entiretly confident of my ability that day because of the crappy run on Thursday…so 8 miles seemed fairly daunting.I started out with Amanda, who is about my pace. Coach Brett was with is for a little while and Coach Edna’s daughter was there as well. She has run with TNT before and is faster so she and another faster person were up ahead as well as Brett. Amanda and I ran along, talked some, and made our way up the slightly evil hills. The last time I’d run this route was when we did the 5 mile run…and surprisingly for this only being my second time running it, I felt GREAT when we got to the water station *which for the 5 mile run was the halfway point*. I stopped and stretched and got some water. I talked with Edna’s daughter some and she said she highly recommended STICKING to the program because when she did her marathon she ignored the program and apparetly it didn’t work well. Coach Brett told her that there was no worry about me doing the program because I am doing very well and blogging and everything. YAY!!!Woah, I might actually run an entire half marathon. How crazy is that?So we ran on and got to the halfway mark and turned around…I felt GREAT at halfway and ran a little faster. We went back to the water station and stopped again for a few minutes. Then we pressed on up the hills. There are 2 hills on the way back that are just plain evil. The first hill and the last hill…but we ran the whole way, stopped at the last water station, then ran on back to the parking lot. I didn’t want to stop. I went a little farther past where I usually stop to walk and cool down. It felt REALLY good. I was SOOO excited that I had ran 8 miles!!!!Amanda and I stretched and cooled down. We also realized that we’d ran 8 miles in about an hour and fifteen minutes. It’d taken us an hour and a half to do the entire thing, but that was with 3 water stops of at least 5 minutes each…so…NOT TOO BAD AT ALL!!!!I’m so proud. For the rest of the day I announced to anyone that would stand still “I RAN 8 MILES THIS MORNING!!!”Ok…so I announced it to a few people today as well…but what can I say? 8 miles rocked.

Days 39 and 41

Well I’m a lot better at doing the workouts than blogging about them.Saturday I did 7 miles on my own because our coaches had other commitments. I was very proud of myself for making it 7 whole miles. I parked my car in the park and did 2 miles around the park, stopped for a drink, did another 2 through the wooded area, had some powerade, then did the last 3 miles as an out and back by the river. Pretty good days work. Then I went off to the car wash and bake sale. We did pretty well I think.Today is cross training so I’ve done some yoga, crunches, and push ups. Later I think I’ll ride my bike, do pilates, or hike in the woods with the dogs I’m pet sitting.Off to work for now!!!I promise to be better about blogging. Really.

Day 37/38

Apparently I forgot to write yesterday.I was unable to do my 4 miles on Wednesday because I was still sick. However Thursday I felt better and instead of 3 miles I did 4. It was a pretty good run and I was proud.Tomorrow we don’t have a group run so we’ll see how I do with 7 miles on my own. I need to go grab some power gel…I think I’ll take Coach Brett’s advice and try the vanilla.Alrightly, much to do, including finishing my letters!! I did a lot of fund raising at mom’s school. I passed out goodies with my card attached and it worked pretty well. I got 3 donations on the spot!Gotta run!!!

Day 35

So I didn’t cross train yesterday. Personal issues got in the way. However today I did my 3 mile run and I did the first half at a pretty brutal pace. I really needed the run to clear my head and help figure things out. I’ve got a lot going on right now and it’s been very stressful for the past few days.I really think I’d be losing it if it wasn’t for running. Having the goal of the half-marathon is really helping me. I’m really excited and I’m glad to have something to keep me sane.

Day 32

Rocking song of the day: Tom Petty – I won’t back down. Today was the day of running into random people. However first let me run around screaming my head off about my accomplishment:I RAN 6 MILES ON MY OWN!!! NO TRAINING GROUP MOTIVATION!!! ALL BY MYSELF!!!!It was one of those “Holy crap I really can do this” moments.I couldn’t run with the group this morning because I had to work. Plus I didn’t feel good yesterday and only marginally better this morning…but I felt OK by this evening and decided to head out. Apparently drinking obscene amounts of fluids and sleeping tons can really work!!!So running through the park today I passed what used to be the city swimming pool. It’s now just grass…filled in because the city said it cost too much to keep open… It was weird passing by there. I can remember my grandma teaching me to swim. I remember hanging out at that pool with Beth when our friends were life guards. It’s sad to see it gone…but nice to have the memories. So I continued running…swatting at gnats…looking like an idiot…which Laura pointed out to me as she passed on her bike.I had my GU on me and made it to about 3.5 miles before breaking into it. Since this was my first trial run with GU I decided on the tri-berry flavor. I love berry everything so…that seemed like a safe bet.Not so much. It tasted like sickenly sweet berry sucker met liquid cold medication. We’ll be moving on to a new flavor next time.

So I ate about 3/4 of the GU and pitched it. Continued my run and at around the 4 mile mark I ran into my old roommates whom I hadn’t seen or spoken with in a few years. It was really good to see them and we talked for a few minutes.

I headed back towards the car and was going up the steep hill when a Jeep went by on the road and honked at me and the passenger yelled my name. I turned in time to see an arm, shoulder, and leg and not much else. Later I found out that this was my good friend Mark, but for about an hour after my run I was very confused.

So upon reaching the 6 mile mark back at the car I ran into my parent’s next door neighbor, Mrs. Clarke and her dog Spunky. I hadn’t seen them in years and she barely recognized me. It was great seeing her and chatting though.

Well, it’s late, and despite the cold I had yesterday (And I mean I was SICK. Fever, headache, body ache, drainage, sore throat…EVERYTHING) I managed to work 6 hours and then run 6 miles today….so….I’m going to hit the hay. (And I almost mean that literally…helloooooooooo hay season!!)

Happy Trails!

I ran 6 miles. I ran a 10K. I freaking ROCKED today.

Day 30

It’s a bit warm out there. Although the temperature is rising I’m doing fairly well at keeping hydrated.I went to the park for my usual run. It wasn’t as warm at the park as it was yesterday even though I went later in the morning than the day before. There were several people out biking and walking today. It was a nice run and it was a decent temperature in the shade. I did 3.5 miles at a pretty good pace. I really need to get a watch though.Today I also stopped in the local running store and grabbed some GU and shot blocks. Because I have to run my long run alone this week I need to have them to take with me. I’m debating where I will do this run. If I run at the park I usually go to I can do an out and back there and do the 6 miles, or I could go to town and do just one way on the trail there…and make someone pick me up. I’ll probably run my normal trail though. I think I can take a water bottle and hide it at the halfway point. There are several places along the trail you can park so I suppose I could park in the middle, run one way, run to the car, run the other way, then run back.Hmm…not a bad idea!!Well, tomorrow’s an off day, then the LONG RUN!!! I’ll let you know how that works out!

Day 29

I ran my usual run at the park today. I enjoyed being in my familar space. I did about 3.5 miles. Then I did a lot of stretching and stuff. I did fairly well for today so I’m pleased.I found out that I won’t be able to go to the group run this Saturday. Instead I’ll be at work so I’ll have to run 6 miles ON MY OWN…it’s kinda scary. I seem to run better with the group.  Therefore I’m slightly nervous but we’ll see how it goes.Well I’m going to head off to get my letters done so I can maybe find one of the mentors this weekend and get them in the mail. YAY FUNDRAISING!!

Day 28

Today started out with a nice run on the Huckelberry Trail. I did around 3.5 miles. It was a really nice run. I like the trail but it is a little poorly marked. The one I usually run has markers every quarter mile and this one only has clear markers every mile. Sometimes on the benches there are mile markers but they are not in any real order. For example within the first mile there are 5 or so benches noting milage like 5.45, 5.38, and 5.05…(I start at the “end” of the trail and work back because it’s closer to my house) THEN after you pass mile marker 5 there is maybe ONE bench with a marker and then NOTHING for over .75 miles. But that’s ok.So it was a decent run. Got kinda humid out towards the end though. After my run I headed to the elementary school where my mother teaches second grade. I spoke to her children and 3 or 4 other classrooms about TNT and doing marathons because tomorrow they are doing Relay For Life and raising money for cancer as well. All the teachers really appreciated me coming and one gave me a donation!! That was VERY exciting! I really enjoyed talking to the kids AND teachers about what I do. I think I’ll tell mom I can come back and do it again. The kids had a lot of questions so answering them was fun as well. I’d like to go back after I complete this marathon and tell them even more about it. Today I went over things like proper clothing and reminded them of SUNSCREEN and also to drink lots of water.Speaking of donations, I FINALLY got my printer up and running and it now has ink so I am ready to roll on getting my fundraising letters out. Excellent. I’m also going to print up some labels so I don’t have to write my return address 1400 times. Well, gotta run!!!

Day 25

I have never before in my life ran 5 full miles. But I did it!!!Actually Coach Brett said it was a little over 5 miles because of where he put the water station. So…I ran 5 miles today. I’m pretty excited!!We went a different way than usual because of the extended distance. Brett said “It’s going to be a little more hilly than ususal”. Uh…that was a SLIGHT understatement!!! There were probably only about 3 places where the trail was actually flat. But it was fun. I ran with Amanda today. She and I did a decent pace. It really helps to run with some one to keep you going.I’m quite excited about today’s accomplishment. I celebrated with a BIG chocolate chip cookie. YAY!!!!I’m going to go watch the rest of the Country Music Marathon which is on TV right now. I’ve been counting the TNT members I can spot!!

Then I came home and did a little strenght training to work on my runners knee.In Marathoning for Mortals I’m on the part about nutrition. I’ve been slacking on that and I feel that it’s time for a grocery store run. Healthy things ONLY!!!Tomorrow is a rest day and then Saturday I’ll be running 5 miles!!! Very exciting! Well, off to work on fundraising things!

Day 22

“Pain is temporary, pride is forever.” ~AnonymousToday’s run was down by the river. I did 3 miles, all running no stopping. Pretty good run. There is now a picnic table in the middle of the New River so that was interesting. Passed the man with the really big camera that I’ve passed before. He’s interesting.I need to work on my DIET more. But the run was good. I really wish I could have made it to the Runabout run but I couldn’t get anyone to take my shift at work. Oh well. I’m going to start asking Wednesday’s off. After work I had a TNT meeting. We went over fundraising stuff which was good. I’m one of the top fundraisers for Blacksburg this week so I was excited. We went over some general things and we will be having a bake sale and car wash on June 9th so that’s something to look forward to. YAY fundraising!!!!Tomorrow’s goal is 3 miles PLUS strength training. I really need to do some preventative maintenance on my knees.I haven’t read my book in like 3 days so I’m going to go do that now.YAY for sticking to my schedule so far!!!!

Day 21

Well it’s not every day that you run into your 10th grade biology teacher.I almost did just that.I was running on the trail in the quiet section of the park and there was a Jeep…which is sort of unusual but not all together unexpected since this area of the park has road access about 40 feet from where the Jeep was parked. And I thought to myself “That looks like Mr. Taylors jeep from high school”And it was.He was setting up a field trip for 3rd graders…so I ran through a field trip, complete with microscopes, turtles, and snakes.I ran very quickly from the snakes.Todays run was a little over 2 miles. I did fairly well. Tomorrow I’m hoping to make it to Runabout for their weekly runs but we’ll have to wait and see. Depends on how things go with work.Well, that’s all for today!!

Day 20

YAY CROSS TRAINING!!!Yesterday I sort of remembered how to ride a bike. And by “sort of” I mean I almost killed myself and some elderly people. But…we all lived. I’m very excited about my bike, regardless of the potential injury to myself and others. It’s going to be great for cross training.Speaking of cross training. Couldn’t ride the bike today due to a rain storm…so today I did 45 minutes of pilates. That was nice. Very relaxing which is what I needed after working 11 hours today.Well, I suppose dinner is in order so I’ll catch back up with everyone tomorrow after running. Tomorrow I also need to get all my fundraising stuff in order. There are post cards and letters to be sent, Thank You’s to be written and much much more!!!

Day 18

Hi there!!Today’s training schedule dictated that I run 4 miles with our training group.Let me just tell you after not getting much sleep I was NOT thinking I was in any condition to do such a thing at 8 in the morning…but I was wrong. I met up with the group and started my run with one of the mentors, Peggy. We trotted along and Coach Brett dropped behind us to run with some other people. Peggy and I were out in front and going at a nice easy pace. Jogging with her really helped me set a good pace that I could maintain for a long time. I was OK with her pace but was more comfortable going slightly ahead so I did. At the half-way mark I was feeling GREAT!!! So I just kept on trucking and quickly ran into Coach Brett and another girl from the group. Brett turned and ran with me back toward the start.I liked running with Coach Brett a lot. He said I was doing very well and having his encouragement REALLY helped me make it the whole way. He said he liked the way I was really getting into our training program and he thought I would do very well. I was sooooooo excited to hear that!!! It really made me feel like I CAN do this.I told him I was impressed that I wasn’t tired even though I didn’t sleep well, but I had eaten pasta the night before and I could REALLY tell I had a little extra kick. He was glad to hear that and when we were almost back to the building we started from he let me go on by myself and he turned back to coach some of the others.I was SOOO excited that I made it the entire 4 miles!!! Running with the group really does help, it makes me push myself just a little bit, but I also keep a good pace and can usually do more than I probably would have alone.I still am feeling good, not really tired…pretty proud of myself though!!!After the run I went into work for a little bit and then after that Laura took me to pick up my NEW BIKE!!! I can’t wait to use it for cross training on Monday.

Overall a really great training day!!! Plenty of stretching and water drinking included too!!! Tomorrow’s a rest day so I might wait and write again on Monday.

Day 16

Well today I ran one of my favorite parts of the park. It’s my “usual” run. It goes through the woods, past the creek, up a big hill, down into the main park, and then instead of laping the park I head toward the university for a little bit. I usually run/walk it, but today I went REALLY far and ran the WHOLE thing!!! I did that some last summer…but this was the first time in a long time I’ve ran that part of the trail the WHOLE way without stopping….including the big, big hill.I was pretty excited/proud.I think my total distance was around 3 miles but we’ll call it 2.5. But still, a pretty rockin day. And tonight I have a TNT meeting. We have a nutrition/injury prevention clinic so I’m excited about that. Also I forgot to mention that on SOME wednesday nights I run with Runabout Sports in town. They have a program that if you run with them on their weekly runs you put your miles in a chart and when you reach 100 miles with them you get a cool shirt. After 500 you get FREE SHOES!!!! I’m excited. 94 miles to go.Today while reading my marathoning book I learned that I have the first part of being a long distance athlete. I am, in fact, breathing!!That was part of the book and it made me quite happy. It also mentions TNT several times, and one of the authors is a TNT trainer so it makes me really excited. PLUS I’m amazed at my donations so far. $475!!! Not including the $50 from ME!!!! YAY!!!!The book also asked me to answer some questions (mostly multiple choice so the answers will reflect that) and I’m going to write them down here:What Is Your Age? – 18-30
What Is Your Gender? – Female
What Is Your Weight? – I am less than 10 pounds over my ideal weight
Describe Your General Health. – I have been under a doctor’s care for ailments but I am currently healthy
Describe Your Injury History. – I have had injuries but they have since healed and I am currently injury free
Describe Your Current Activity Level. – I participate in some form of continuous aerobic activity most days of the week (4-6 days)
Describe Your Past Activity Level. – I have been active for more than a year
What Is Your Training Goal? – I would like to finish the race
How Many Days Per Week Can You Commit To Training? – 3-4 days per week
How Much Time Can You Commit To Training? – 6-8 hours per week
List The Top Three Factors That Motivate You To Exercise – Weight loss/gain, it makes me happy, and I want to see how far I can go
List Your Top Three Challenges To Finishing This Training Program – Lack of TIME, Stress from work, Lack of confidenceAccording to the book I should refer back to these and see how they change…so…I’ll let ya know!!

“Running is a big question mark that’s there each and every day. It asks you, ‘Are you going to be a wimp or are you going to be strong today?’” ~Peter Maher

Day 15

Well the other day I bought “Marathoning for Mortals” by John Bingham, one of my personal heros. He’s known as “The Penguin” because as he puts it…he does not run, he waddles. So far the book has a really wonderful way of describing this little adventure I’ve put myself on…I’m enjoying it a lot.Today I ran in the city park. I did a lap around the entire park and there is some confusion on how far that actually is. One marker says from Start to Start it’s 1.96 miles. The other says it’s 1 3/4 miles. So…I went with the greater of two evils and ran past the start sign to the 1/4 mile marker. That way I at LEAST did 2 miles of ALL RUNNING!!! Honestly I think it is 1.96 miles because the pathways were recently re-done AND that marker is newer and brighter but hey, a little extra can’t hurt.In other news, my favorite song to cool down to is “Run In Place” by The Nadas.Download it.I’m going to go read my book. I also am going to make a mental note to post quotes on here.
